I am deeply concerned by the government’s proposals to make life harder for people seeking safety in the UK. As well as undermining the right to asylum generally, these policies will have a disproportionate impact on LGBTQI+ people seeking safety here.

As my MP, I’m asking you to please attend the Westminster Hall Debate this Wednesday 17th December at 9.30 on the potential impact of the proposed reforms on people with protected characteristics, and speak up for members of the LGBTQI+ community.

LGBTQI+ people come to the UK hoping to live openly and without fear, but reviewing their refugee status every 2.5 years could force them to stay in the closet. Living openly as LGBTQI+ in the UK could put them at even greater risk if returned to their country of origin.

Revoking refugee status if a person’s country of origin is deemed ‘safe’ could also be disastrous for LGBTQI+ people. These blanket designations of safety fail to reflect the dangers faced by particular social groups, as we saw with the previous government’s designation of Georgia as a ‘safe country’ despite their repressive anti-LGBTQI+ laws.
